Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School is usually filled with the usual bustling springtime energy as the school year steps into its final marking period. However one particular day was different, a day where youthful energy springs throughout the school’s hallways. On “Bring Your Child to Work Day,” SPFHS not only became a place of learning, but also of exciting discovery for the faculty’s children. On this day, many classes and clubs are on display, but the Environmental Club stole the spotlight by hosting an unforgettable event for students, staff and their children.
On Thursday, April 23, the SPFHS Environmental Club hosted one the most highly anticipated guest presentations: the wolf-dogs from Howling Woods Farm. These rescues were open for greeting and petting for all, while they got to learn about these wolf-dogs and rescue programs alike. By having the event coincide with Bring Your Child to Work Day, the event’s impact reached far more than most guest presentations.
The visit spread positivity and awareness that resonated with many, further beyond the classroom’s walks. By allowing experts to educate the audience on wolves and their relevance to our ecosystem, the event bridged the gap between education and amazement. Additionally, by offering a hands-on experience, the event would encourage the audience to participate towards environmental awareness and protection.
“My favorite part of seeing the wolf dog was the fact that they were so loving and friendly, it brightened everyone’s day,” junior Josephine Rebuth told The Fanscotian.
While the wolf-dogs grabbed most people’s attention, the AP Environmental Science classroom still had many things to offer that day. Visitors were invited to explore the many animal headstart programs available in the classroom including terrapins, rainbow trout and ducklings. The room also had goody-bags, tattoos and other activities to guarantee that any child can have an engaging, yet educational time.
“It was really fun to show all the kids that visited the cool activities that the Environmental club has to offer, and the animals we take care of were the best way to show that,” junior Knevin Pilley said.
In total, the Environmental Club proved how environmental education can be fun. The programs they offered on Bring Your Child to Work Day not only displayed the beauty of nature, but also the high quality of education that SPFHS strives to deliver.
