On Wednesday, Oct. 29, SPFHS’s Student Movement Against Cancer (SMAC) organization held its first ever school-wide Pink Out spirit day. Students were encouraged to wear pink (or white) to support breast cancer awareness.
SMAC, advised by Physical Education teacher and wrestling coach Marc Fabiano, is a group that raises awareness for all types of cancer by running a series of special events throughout the school year. Taking advantage of their large social media following, the club was able to get mass participation from the student body.
An event more popular than any school spirit week, the Pink Out brought students together and was a fun way to address a serious disease. The Pink Out also gave an incentive to the grade who participated the most, in the form of a free bagel breakfast. The seniors took home the reward by a slim margin.
Significant planning went into the event–and it paid off. SPFHS senior and SMAC board member Sam Chesky was happy with the turnout but also looks forward to the future.
“We had around 900 kids participate in the school, which was great,” Chesky told The Fanscotian. “We want to improve that growth, and also do more events like this throughout the year.”
SMAC is one of the school’s most popular and successful clubs, and their continued pursuit of success is what sets them apart. Chesky also hopes to implement more color wars with different colors, shedding light on different types of cancer.
“This event will live on past my days at SPFHS,” Chesky said. “It’s only going to get bigger and better from here.”
