For 25 years, 16 Prospect Wine Bar and Bistro was a central hotspot in Westfield for residents to gather and enjoy some grub. But, after New Year’s Eve owners Tim and Chris Boyle announced they would be shutting their doors for good.
“I think we made a mark on this community,” Chris Boyle said, “It’s like their home away from home, where people could gather and be comfortable and celebrate the good times and milestones in life, happy and sad.”
The announcement came as a shock to the community due to the abruptness of the closure. On Jan 24, however, the owners invited regulars to have a symbolic Irish wake at the restaurant.
The business was opened in 2001 by the brothers who lived in Westfield their whole lives and had a passion for culinary arts and a goal to create an atmosphere of community. Their diverse menu ensured all guests had something to enjoy, as well as an extensive wine selection. Within their dishes, you could see nods to French cuisine, which is where Tim Boyle studied.
The biggest appeal was the live music, five nights a week, where local entertainers would perform. The spot escalated the nightlife scene and began to become a central point for many in town.
Tim Boyle shared with customers that the closure was due to personal health reasons. Boyle would not be able to keep up with the demanding job anymore, forcing him to make a tough call.
On that January night, the community filled the venue with laughs, memories and tears. They served food and drinks and even hired a live musician. In typical funeral fashion, a casket was carried in with pallbearers. Customers got to bask in the atmosphere one last time and say goodbye to their favorite local spot.
“I hope I gave everybody the greatest Irish goodbye they ever had,” Tim Boyle said.
