Beloved director and actor Rob Reiner and wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14, 2025. The couple was found by their daughter Romy Reiner, quickly followed by their son Nick Reiner’s arrest.

The couple’s suspected killer, Nick Reiner, is currently facing two counts of first-degree murder, according to Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

“He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife,” Hochman said. “These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.”

Although Nick Reiner’s troubled youth was kept private by his parents, as an adult, he has openly discussed his history of drug abuse. An interview with Dopey host David Mannheim from 2018 foreshadowed recent disturbing events. Nick Reiner described a time when he destroyed the guest house while “spun out on uppers” after his parents told him to leave their property.

“I started with the TV and then I went over to the lamp and then, just everything in the guest house got wrecked,” Nick explained.

The night before Romy Reiner found her deceased parents, Rob and Nick Reiner had attended a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.

Sources told NBC News that Nick Reiner’s behavior was disturbingly odd. While not on the original guest list, his parents brought Nick, possibly an attempt to make him feel more supported amid his troubling mental state. One source detailed Nick Reiner interrupting a conversation comedian Bill Hader was having. When Hader told him the conversation was private, Nick Reiner proceeded to stand still and glare at him.

Other sources mentioned how he continuously went up to guests and asked if they were famous in a seemingly manic state, causing an argument between him and his parents.

Rob Reiner had made multiple public attempts to support his son until the end. Most notably, Rob Reiner directed and Nick Reiner co-wrote Being Charlie in 2015: a movie detailing a teenager’s battle with drug addiction and complex relationship with his father. The movie was meant to help the father and son understand each other’s perspectives, they explained on their press tour.

Joseph Scott, a professor of applied forensics at Jackson State University, told Law&Crime Network that based on speculative facts of the case, the murder was even more disturbing than originally thought.

“Now, if they are in bed, going back to my earlier supposition relative to the knife and being able to put pressure down, that would potentially open the door to the perpetrator having to get in bed with them, let that sink for a second and be on top them, and apply pressure anteriorly,” Scott theorized.

The 32 year old appeared in court on Wednesday, Dec. 17, wearing a blue jacket that is suspected to prevent self-harm. The only words he spoke were “Yes, your honor” after being asked if he was willing to give up his rights to a speedy trial. Nick Reiner’s lawyer, Alan Jackson, is known for his high profile clients such as Harvey Weinstein, and most recently Karen Read, who was acquitted of murder charges just earlier this year.

Jackson asked Judge Theresa McGonigle to delay the arraignment to January 2026, in light of the complex issues of the case and privacy for the Reiner family.

“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” Romy Reiner and Jake Reiner said in their statement to CBS News. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
