On Feb. 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched coordinated air and missile strikes on military targets across Iran, rapidly expanding conflict in the region. The mission of the strikes was to damage Iran’s military infrastructure and missile systems.
The initial strikes targeted the nation’s capital, Tehran, along with other Iranian cities. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed during these early attacks. According to the Iranian government, a leadership council was established.
In the days following the attacks, the U.S. and Israel continued operations against Iranian military assets, primarily to weaken Iran’s ability to launch regional attacks and military.
“The United States is not expanding its military objectives in Iran. Our mission remains focused on damaging Iran’s offensive capabilities,” Pete Hegseth, U.S. Secretary of Defense, said.
Iran’s response has included missile and drone attacks on the U.S. and allied targets in the Middle East, such as regional bases. The retaliation by Iran has created widespread conflict and led to many casualties and damage all over the region.
Humanitarian concerns have arisen because of the strikes, reports of civilian casualties have urged many to call for the restraint of the conflict.
Where it currently stands, the U.S. will persist with their operation until they determine Iran is no longer a threat.
“The campaign will continue to target Iran’s missile production and military infrastructure,” the U.S. The Department of War said.
