Recently, New Jersey has seen unseasonably warm weather in early March 2026, specifically March 9, March 10 and March 11. The skies have been mostly clear and sunny, with daily high temperatures reaching into the mid 60’s and 70’s.
“Sunday will turn the corner as we begin to see higher temperatures,” meteorologist Mike Lee said.
Lee references Sunday, March 8 as the starting point of increased temperatures, as temperatures were already in the mid 50’s.
Not only is this weather warm, it is around 15 to 20 degrees above the normal March average in New Jersey. This climate is already odd, but considering a period of frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall recently occurred in late February, it is even stranger.
This spike in temperature is what some are calling a “false spring,” as the weather reflects the normal climate for later in the spring season, like April or May. False springs occur naturally, however climate change in recent years have made these events more frequent.
Many New Jersey residents took advantage of the sunny weather by going down the shore for a day by the water.
While the upbeat weather has been an enjoyable light at the end of a long, wintry tunnel, it doesn’t signify the best for the planet.
In some cases, false springs have the ability to make plants bloom too early, which can distrust ecosystems and leave them vulnerable to the cold weather that often follows. Trends in global warming and climate change have posed issues in recent years and will continue to shift what we know about the state of our planet.
