On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the Sports Debate club held their interest meeting during the second half of lunch in Room 252 and first official meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Approximately 50 students attended each session, showing great promise for this new club.
“It was a good first meeting. We had many students come. We talked about which team was the best in the NFL,” junior co-founder Jack Yablonowitz told The Fanscotian.
Advised by math teacher Joseph Cistaro and junior presidents Yablonowitz and Brady Feltingoff, the club attracts a wide variety of students that have an interest in sports. Yablonowitz and Feltingoff were inspired to bring their passion for having conversations about sports in the school.
“I wanted to spread my love for talking about sports in a way that everybody could discuss and be involved in,” Yablonowitz said.
Google classroom questions are assigned to club members before and after each meeting, allowing them to give insight on what the next debate topic will be and provide feedback on whether their opinion has changed.
Yablonowitz hopes students will take away the importance of listening and opening themselves up to different perspectives through his club.
“Students [need] to understand [other] people’s opinions, even in [controversial] topics in the world,” Yablonowitz said. “Debate is [important], knowing how to disagree and how to state your point.”
Moving forward, they expect to hold another meeting in a couple of weeks. If you are interested in joining the Sports Debate club, check for updates on google classroom using the code YU3WXKMX or on their Instagram account.
