On Sunday, Nov. 2, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Marching Band attended their final competition of the season: state championships. The performance occurred at The College of New Jersey, where finals happen every year.
The SPF Marching Band finished sixth out of ten bands in Division AAA with a score of 87.3. The band impressed both judges and the audience with their rehearsed choreography and playing, which they’ve practiced for months.
“I feel like the show we put on was the best we performed all season,” junior Knevin Pilley said.
Beginning in the summer with band camp, the group has practiced their show countless times. Throughout the months, they perform at smaller competitions and occasionally at SPFHS football games at halftime.
This season’s show, titled The Verse, included songs “Go Time” and “Beautiful Things.”
By including a famous pop song in the band’s show, it was much more recognizable to the audience.
Next year, the marching band will perform for the Memorial Day parade and continue summer practices, while the color guard will continue their winter season.
Overall, band members reflected positively. The band is proud of what they accomplished and eager to improve for the next year.
“I thought this was a great way to end a season that had a lot of dedication and hard work,” section leader Aleksander Stevens said.
