With the school year coming close to the end, it comes time to recognize the amazing students at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. Recently, cross country and track runner Maddy Bord was named the NJSIAA Scholar Athlete to represent SPFHS for the 2017-18 school year. Every year, SPFHS has the opportunity to name one athlete this title. In the past years, student athletes such as swimmer Sarah Davis and baseball and basketball player Peter Warren have won this award. We caught up with her to see what she has to say about being named this great title.
What is the criteria you need to be named this title?’
“I think what they’re looking for is a top student in the graduating class that is also an athlete. It’s a big honor, especially for my program because I don’t know if track is always recognized as much as it should be.”
Do you know who has won in the past?
“I only know that Sarah Davis has gotten this and it is such an honor to be put in this category with her because she was such an amazing swimmer.”
Is there a special event for being named this?
“Yes, on May 20th they are having this luncheon with all of the scholar athletes from every school. I was able to bring four guests, so that would be my parents, Mr. Koegel, and Mr. Miller.”
How do you feel about being named this title?
“It’s really exciting. I have thought about this honor in the past because I was aware of it, but I didn’t think I would be considered.”
