At LeGrande Park on Friday Sep. 11, the girls tennis team lost a series of hard-fought matches to Kent Place 5-0.
The first singles match was between SPF’s Gauri Deshpande and Kent Place’s Emma Veipocke. Deshpande put up a good fight, but Veipoucke showed why she is the defending Union County champion with 6-3 and 6-0 wins.
At second singles, Ellie Falivene beat SPFHS’ junior Sophia De Iorio 6-2, 6-4.
Senior Madison Dieu lost to Alex Girasole in a super tiebreaker 10-7 after splitting the first two sets. Dieu had won the first set 6-2, but lost the second set 4-6.
The Raiders’ first doubles team of Olivia and Sophia Tumsuden lost in three sets to Olivia Cornish and Caroline Syder. The Tumsudens won the first set 6-4, but fell in the next two byscores of 3-6 and 0-6 respectively.
The second doubles match was a particularly tough loss. The match also went into a super tiebreaker after SPF’s Lizzie Kaminoff and Maggie Richard and Kent Place’s Kelcie Engles and Renne Safran split the first two sets 5-7 and 7-6. Engles and Safran won the super tiebreaker by a score of 10-8.
The girls tennis team next match is on Wednesday Sep. 16 against Westfield at Tamaques Park. The next home game is against Summit on Sep. 17.
