Celebrated by millions of people across the globe, Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the lunar calendar and is one of the most important cultural holidays of the year, symbolizing renewal, family and fresh beginnings.
Each year is represented by one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, and 2026 is the Year of the Horse, a symbol of strength, energy and perseverance.
For Keira Evans, a sophomore at SPFHS Lunar New Year represents more than a celebration — it is time for reflection, renewal and hope.
“Lunar new year means a fresh start to me,” Evans told The Fanscotian. “[It’s] a time to reflect on the past year, let go of negativity and set goals for the year ahead.” She said the holiday encourages positive change and optimism for the future.
Evans said her family celebrates Lunar New Year by coming together and spending quality time with family.
“My family usually celebrates by gathering together, sharing a large meal and spending time with relatives,” Evans said.
Cleaning the house is one of the most important traditions in her family.
“One important tradition is cleaning the house before the new year to remove bad luck,” Evans said.
She added that honoring elders and ancestors is also meaningful.
“It shows respect and appreciation for family and history,” Evans said.
Food is another central part of the celebration, with many dishes carrying symbolic meaning. Evans said dumplings are eaten to represent wealth, noodles symbolize long life and fish represents abundance and prosperity for the year ahead.
Evans said lunar new year celebrations have changed as she’s gotten older.
“When I was younger, celebrations [felt] longer and more focused on family traditions,” Evans said. “Now, celebrations feel more modern and sometimes smaller due to busy schedules, and technology, social media playing a bigger role.”
Despite these changes, traditional symbols remain important. Evans said the color red stands at the most important because it represents luck and happiness.
According to Evans, the lunar new year continues to teach valuable lessons about the value of family in new beginnings.
