For over a decade, citizens of Scotch Plains-Fanwood have come together every year to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by contributing, volunteering and participating in the MLK Day of Service.
This day is not just a “day off” of work or school, its goal is to honor Dr. King’s significance as a leader in the Civil Rights Movement, a time to reflect on his dream and celebrate the achievements he made. Since this is the only federal holiday considered a National Day of Service, it encourages people to engage in community events.
The opening ceremony in Scotch Plains-Fanwood begins at 10 a.m. at the YMCA (1340 Martine Ave., Scotch Plains) until 11 a.m. After this, community members of all ages take part in different activities and service projects, contributing their assistance to local organizations.
“I choose to volunteer at my temple who hosts an event on this day, because I think it is really important to honor [Dr. King’s] legacy and remember what he has done for our country,” sophomore Evelyn Lieberman told The Fanscotian.
People participate in making crafts (like cards for veterans), hosting or donating to supply drives, volunteering at food pantries and much more. These opportunities take place between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., located at several different locations throughout the town.
“At Temple Sholom, I sell baked goods and help people with directions on where to donate to the Children’s Specialized Hospital,” Lieberman said.
Overall, the MLK Day of Service provides a chance for people to honor Dr. King’s impact on the world through hands-on community service.
