2017-2018 Winter sports previews: Girls basketball
December 28, 2017
The Scotch Plains Fanwood High School girls varsity basketball team is ready to dominate on the court this season. With a record of 4-17 for the 2016-2017 season, the team is excited to improve their record and work on communicating on and off the court.
“Communication is key because it helps the team know where to go and what to do on the court,” captain Brianna O’Brien said.
Upperclassmen hope to get every teammate feeling encouraged and prepared for their games.
The team’s first few games will be against Governor Livingston, Summit, and Union who are all well ranked basketball schools.
“Our division as a whole is filled with really good teams,” coach Ryan McKenna said.
Last year was a large growing year for the team, with a varsity team of mostly inexperienced, lowerclassmen. The coaches hope to work on building up the girl’s self confidence so they can dominate the teams in their conference and feel certainty in their skills.
The girls prepped for the season with two preseason scrimmages against Watchung Hills and Plainfield. On Dec. 23, the team pulled out a win against Verona in their season home game opener.
Key players this year include Nya Downing and Abbe-gayle Burton whose offensive skills will help to lead the team to victory.
“Overall I hope the girls have a good time and enjoy themselves,” McKenna said.
The team will gear up to face Union on Jan. 1 in the SPFHS new gym. Remember to come out and show your Raider pride!
