On Sunday, Nov. 30, in the final moments of the game, the New York Jets took down the Atlanta Falcons via a last-second field goal from veteran kicker Nick Folk. In a game that came down to the wire, the struggling Jets were able to beat the odds and pull off the upset against a beat up Falcons team. With this win moving New York up to 3 wins, the question arises: does a win do any good this time of year?
As it stands right now, the Jets have a less than one percent chance of making the playoffs. With one more loss, they are certainly eliminated. Also, when looking at the schedule ahead at their upcoming five games, they currently aren’t favored to win a single one. With the Justin Fields experiment being a failure and Tyrod Taylor being nothing more than a temporary fix, it seems that it’s time for yet another new quarterback in New York.
If the Jets decide to choose a quarterback on draft day, then they won’t need a very high pick to do so. The Saints could possibly snatch a pick in front of the Jets and look for their new gunslinger, but it is improbable based on remaining schedule and other needs. But if the Jets think signing another veteran could solve their problems, then they’re going to want as high a pick as possible.
Even a casual fan could tell that the Jets could use help on defense, and two surefire star players on that side of the ball will go within as many picks. Edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. out of Miami and safety Caleb Downs from Ohio State are two “NFL ready” players, according to analysts across the country. They are the kind of players that could change a defense.
But with this recent Jets victory and the possibility of them squeaking out a win down the stretch, it’s not looking like either of these game-changers will be playing in New York next year. While it is always about winning, in such a failure of a season, the most important thing for the Jets is the future.
It’s simple: Winning games right now doesn’t get the Jets anywhere. Quite simply, losing out and having the opportunity to grab one of these generational talents would be in the best interest of the organization. An avid Jets supporter and SPFHS senior Jake Todaro agrees.
“Our future is much more important than this season. As a Jets fan, I hope we lose every game for the rest of the season,” Todaro told The Fanscotian.
