On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, former popstar Britney Spears was arrested for a suspected DUI in California. She engaged in multiple field sobriety tests and was ultimately taken to jail after failing them. Around 5:30 GMT, she was seen driving her BMW “erratically at a high rate of speed on a motorway,” said California Highway Patrol (CHP). She was then taken briefly to a medical facility by law enforcement officers in order to collect blood samples and follow drunk-driving protocols.
Her public downfall of erratic behavior, drug usage and excessive drinking began in 2007, when videos of her shaving her head and attacking a car with an umbrella circulated and showed the public her once-hidden struggles. Her struggles have continued. On various platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok, she can be seen dancing with a blank expression, as if she’s being controlled by something or being forced to do it. This has caused a lot of public concern, especially since her conservatorship her father had over her has been terminated. However, on Thursday, March 5, her Instagram account was not found and publicly disabled.
“I used to love Britney Spears and her persona, but ever since she started acting like this, I just couldn’t anymore,” sophomore Olivia Diga said.
On May 4, she is set to go to court at Ventura County Superior Court to testify about the incident and get more information on her impounded car as well as any charges or other legal punishments.
As for her DUI, fans aren’t shocked anymore and most don’t even recognize her. The once luxurious and fun singer has let fame overwhelm her persona to the point that she isn’t herself. Representatives for Spears say she will be surrounding herself with friends and family, while also getting the help she needs, but these statements have been repeated over the course of at least the past 10 years with no change. A change is hoped for, but not likely.
