The varsity baseball team played Oratory Prep in the first round of the Union County Tournament this past Saturday and fought their way to the next round, winning the game 2-1.
After many repetitive ground balls and bunts made, pitcher Senior Daniel Wilkinson only gave up one home run in the fifth inning. Wilkinson struck out 13 in all seven innings, only giving up two hits the entire game.
A big moment of controversy was a call on senior William Gale who bunted the ball and was called out at first during the seventh inning. The play before consisted of senior Josh Canavan bunting the ball and being called safe at first. A similar play followed after with Gale. Gale bunted the ball and appeared to be safe but was called out by the umpire, forcing Canavan to second.
The Raiders got back into the game shortly after off a fly ball into the left-center outfield which drove Canavan to home, tying up the score 1-1.
Later in the seventh inning, senior Jonathan Ramos had made it to second. Senior Michael Dieu hit the game winning single down to left-center outfield, driving in Ramos and scoring the second run to win the game for the Raiders.
The Raiders go on the play the Union Farmers in the second round of the Union County Tournament on Saturday, May 4th away at Union High School at 12:00 p.m.
