Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s cross country team traveled to Warinanco Park in Roselle to race in the Union County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championship. Although the Raiders were unable to place first for boys or girls, they finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
The boys had their best performance this meet as a whole. Sophomore Ben Fleischer finished eighth overall out of over 100 boys. He finished the 5150 meter course in 16 minutes and 35 seconds, averaging 5:11 per mile. Four out of the seven boys finished in the top 30. The outstanding times were not the only thing the boys accomplished.
“In the boys varsity race, we had six course personal records out of seven,” said head cross country coach Jeffrey Koegel.
As for the girls, they had a very impressive performance at the race as well. Six out of the seven girls in the varsity race finished in the top 50 out of 96 girls. Junior Maddy Bord finished seventh overall with a time of 19:50. The girls team overall have improved compared to the times in the previous years.
“If you look at the results from this meet last year, the girl’s five girl average time dropped about 54 seconds”, said Koegel.
The cross country team has been having very successful training sessions leading up to this race, and they left it all out on the course.
“It is definitely going to be a memorable day. I have been coaching for a long time and I was very pleased. It was the best race we have gotten from the boys team in years. The girl’s had their best race that we have had as well,” said Koegel.
The next cross country race is the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Sectional on Saturday, November 5th at Greystone-Central Park in Parsippany.
“We are coming back. We are coming back in a hurry,” said Koegel.
