The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys soccer team came back from a first half deficit to triumph over the Elizabeth Minutemen 3-2 on Monday at Wexler Field.
For the fourth time this young season, the Raiders fell behind in the first half but managed to comeback and win the game.
Senior James Tenzer scored the game-winning goal with just under 15 minutes to play. Sophomore Jonathan Schwab played a low cross into the box that found Tenzer, who put the ball past the Union keeper to put the Raiders ahead for good.
Senior Ari Rowenzweig had tied the game about eight minutes before. Rowenzweig’s goal was the result of some nice passing between Robbie Viglione, Schwab, and Jake Longo, with the latter finding Rowenzweig with a nice throughball.
Back in the first half, Rowenzweig had put the Raiders ahead 1-0. He received a long ball, sealed off his defender, and took a shot that deflected off a Union defender and into the back of net.
Union had taken the lead when they scored two goals in a two-minute span. The first goal was scored by Daniel Guillen. The second goal was off of a corner kick played short and was scored by Maximiliano Acosta.
Coach Tom Breznitsky called upon his players at halftime. “I said, ‘You go out there and do what you have been taught,” Breznitsky said, “work hard and that’s all I can ask of you.”
Coach also highlighted the impact of the bench players on the game. “These guys have a positive contribution [to the game].
