After splitting the first two sets, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School girls volleyball team pulled away from Roselle Catholic in the third set and won the match 2-1.
The Raiders fell behind early in the first set, but managed to come back and tie the game at 20-20. The Raiders and Lions then exchanged points, with neither getting enough to pull away until the Raiders scored three straight points to win the game 29-27.
“There are teams that I have had in the past where they would have stopped,” head coach Adrienne Stack said, “When it gets hard, a lot of people do what’s easy. When it gets hard, they do what’s hard. And that’s why we won.”
Roselle Catholic again got out to an early lead in the second set, but the Raiders fought back to take a lead late in the set at 23-22. However, the Lions got three unanswered points to force a third set.
For the third time in the match, the Raiders were down from the beginning. But, they quickly recovered and took the lead at 9-8. From there, they never looked back, winning the set 25-19.
Senior Caroline Yessman led the team with 12 kills and was tied for the team lead in service points with senior Fallon Goldberg. Junior Stephanie Ponterio was the team leader in assists with 27.
The win moved the Raiders to 2-1 on the season.
