The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys soccer team, ranked #2 in the NJ.com poll and #6 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com national poll, defeated John P. Stevens High School 5-0 in their first match on Saturday Sep. 4.
The Raiders scored all five of their goals in the first half. About four minutes into the game, senior co-captain Ari Rosenwseig tapped in a ball from right in front of the net for the first goal of the season.
Senior Jordan Cimring quickly doubled the Raider lead when he scored his first goal of the year.
The third goal was a senior co-caption connection. After the Raiders won a corner, Zach Halma delivered the ball into the box and Jake Longo headed it into the back of the net.
The Raiders’ fourth goal occurred when sophomore Jonathan Schwab took a shot from the right wing that got past the keeper and ended up in the goal.
Senior Alex Guevara scored the fifth and final goal. He took a shot from well outside the 18 and slotted it in the bottom left corner.
Although the Raiders did not score again in the second half, they did control possession. The big lead also allowed room for every field player get some playing time.
Head Coach Tom Breznitsky was happy with the outcome. “We played to our strengths,” he said, “It is always nice to [get the home opener] under our belt.”
The Raiders’ next game is on Thursday against Union at Wexler Field. It is the team’s conference opener.
