On Saturday, Jan. 17, senior wrestler Paul Boyle won the individual Union County Championship at the 215lbs level. Committed to Wesleyan University for wrestling, Boyle became victorious by a 2-1 decision over Union wrestler Nicholas Bertolotti.
“It felt super exciting to [win the county championship],” Boyle told The Fanscotian. “It’s been one of my goals this season and I was glad to accomplish it.”
Boyle is currently undefeated on the year, sitting at 19-0, and is writing a new chapter to his already illustrious high school wrestling career. A four-year-varsity wrestler, Boyle has been dominating his whole high school career and recently notched his 80 career win. With his county win, Boyle joins his older brother John (SPF ‘25) in one of the few SPF wrestlers to accomplish this feat.
Boyle’s current success and county championship win is a testament to the work he puts in throughout the offseason when he is not wrestling with SPF.
“I spend a lot of time on the mat in the offseason,” Boyle said. “Going up to Branchburg and Watchung Hills to just wrestle guys in the offseason tournament all helped me this season.”
The senior announced his commitment to Wesleyan University in Dec. 2025, and will be joining a program that boasts three New England Championships. For Boyle, he credits Wesleyan’s academics as a major reason for his commitment.
“[Wesleyan] is just a great fit, really,” Boyle said. “I like the academic side of the school, and I toured there and loved the people on the team.”
Located in Middletown, Connecticut, Wesleyan is a private liberal arts university that competes in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Despite Boyle’s future plans post-high school, he still has his mind focused on his current high school season. Reaching the District semifinals during his junior year campaign, Boyle aims to make and place in the state tournament this upcoming March.
“I’m aiming to reach 100 wins in my career this season along with making it far in the state tournament,” Boyle said.
Boyle and the SPF wrestling team will face off against rivals Westfield, Friday, Jan. 23 in the SPFHS new gym, where the county champ will look to extend his assertive control on the mat.
