On Saturday, June 1, the most watched annual sporting event in the world will take place: the UEFA Champions League Final. The UEFA Champions League Final is a soccer game that takes place between the top two teams in European soccer. Teams like Manchester City and Real Madrid compete for a spot in the final by playing in an elimination style tournament. 32 teams enter the tournament from countries including England, Spain and France and they play each other in two games. The goals scored by each team will be tallied up, and the team with the most goals scored in the two games will move on to the next round.
This year, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur will battle it out in Madrid, Spain for the ultimate prize in club soccer. Liverpool and Spurs both made historic comebacks to advance from an unforgettable semi-finals round.
Liverpool played Spanish giant F.C. Barcelona in the first round of semis and lost 3-0. In the second game of the semis Liverpool rallied together and won 4-0, putting Liverpool ahead on aggregate 4-3 and punching their ticket to the final.
Spurs played Dutch team AFC Ajax and went down 1-0 in the first round. In the second leg of the semis, Spurs beat Ajax 3-2 courtesy of a hattrick from striker Lucas Moura. The comeback win secured the team’s first appearance in the Champions League Final.
The match is set to be a good one. Liverpool will be lead by a lethal attack with the likes of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. On the other side of the field, their defence is held together by Premier League Player of the Season Virgil van Dijk and Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Spurs also have quite the team of their own, featuring the captain of the England International team, Harry Kane, as well as talent like Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli.
“I think Liverpool will win the Champions League,” said sophomore Rohan Shah. “They have a better attack and a strong backline. Liverpool are also more cohesive and work better as a team than Spurs.”
The world will be waiting to see who emerges victorious this coming Saturday.
