Park Middle School 5th grader, Jamie Bonaccorso, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of two. To help spread awareness, raise money and help other children with diabetes, she decided to design bracelets.
The bracelets, which feature Bonaccorso’s original artwork, came about when she was drawing one day and her father encouraged her to use her talent to raise money for the Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation and the Goryeb Center in Morristown, where she has been treated since she was diagnosed.
“I like to draw anything really,” said Bonaccorso. “I drew some characters in art class so my dad thought it was a good idea to make bracelets to raise money for diabetes. I want other kids with diabetes to know that we need to feel comfortable about our illness and it is important we take care of ourselves in order to stay healthy.”
Despite her condition, Bonaccorso maintains a normal lifestyle and is able to enjoy the same activities as would any other 11-year-old.
“I’ve had diabetes for a really long time. But sometimes I still get a little annoyed when I have to test my blood sugar,” she said.
So far, Bonaccorso’s bracelets have raised over $700 for the cause. They will soon be available at the Terrill Middle School store and can be ordered via e-mail at [email protected] for $5 each
