Social studies teacher Andrea Karanik held the first of a series of art history lectures on Oct. 13 at the Scotch Plains Public Library. The first lecture focused on memorials and shrines such as Egyptian obelisks and the Washington Monument. Karanik chose memorials that would offer her audience a comparative view of how art develops over time and the correlation between different cultures and their ways of honoring the dead. “I wanted to [host these lectures] as a favor to the librarians; they are always doing so much for us and I wanted to give back,” said Karanik. The second lecture will also be at the Scotch Plains Library on Dec. 12 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will focus on sacred spaces around the world.
