New celebrity author Mindy Kaling is a triple threat in the entertainment world. She was a main producer and writer on the hit TV show The Office, currently stars in a show of her creation, The Mindy Project, and is now the author of her own memoir.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) gives a humorous look into Mindy’s life while perpetuating the underlying message of hard work paying off.
Mindy Kaling’s memoir makes readers feel a connection to the author, as if they can refer to her as, “My friend, Mindy.”
Mindy’s distinct voice and unique humor prevail in the memoir, giving the impression of a conversation with the writer herself.
“Mindy Kaling adds humor to everything she does, and you can tell she puts her true personality into her work,” said freshman Morghan Johnson.
Through this hilarious book, Mindy narrates her own life by breaking her story up into five parts: her childhood years, time spent in New York, Hollywood life, romance, and body image.
The book details Mindy’s journey to fame in the comedy world. She second guesses the choices she’s made, but also speaks with confidence about both her mistakes and accomplishments.
Like any good friend, Mindy gives important life advice paired with comical nuggets of wisdom.
She says, “Another old saying is that revenge is a dish best served cold. But it feels best served piping hot, straight out of the oven of outrage. My opinion? Take care of revenge right away.”
Like her counterparts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Mindy debunks the age-old myth that only men can be successful comedians and proves that, yes, women can be funny too.
In the comedy world, Mindy is now taken seriously as a writer, producer and actor, but before all that she was struggling just like anyone else. She tells many stories of going into meetings or interviews and sharing her ideas, and then getting angry and frustrated when her peers didn’t like her work. Looking back, she explains that these obstacles helped shape her into the professional she is today.
Throughout her book, Mindy teaches life lessons to her readers, explaining that criticism can actually be helpful and hard work eventually pays off.
“It is much harder work, but sometimes you have to take destiny into your own hands. It forces you to think about what your strengths really are, and once you find them, you can showcase them, and no one can stop you,” says Mindy.
The most interesting part of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) is the section on The Office, the show that really shot Mindy to fame.
She recounts her experience wearing many hats on the show; she served as a writer, executive producer and actor, and she says that finding a way to balance all three responsibilities was a challenge.
Mindy explains the frustrations that come with her career, including instances when she just can’t be “funny enough.”
Mindy Kaling’s 224-page memoir is definitely worth the read. Her bubbly, loveable personality and oddball humor shine through her words and set her apart from other celebrity authors.
