On Feb. 8, 2026, “The Burbs,” a comedy-horror television series, was released exclusively on Peacock. This series was based on the original movie starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher.
The show revolves around a young couple, Rob (Jack Whitehall) and Samira (Keke Palmer) Fisher, who move into Rob’s childhood home in the quiet cul-de-sac in Hinkley Hills. However, their seemingly perfect life begins to unravel when a suspicious man moves across the street. As tensions escalate, Samira and her quirky neighbors uncover secrets that could change the town’s reputation forever.
Each character adds a unique comedic element that enhances both the humor and mystery of the story. In particular, Dana (Paula Pell) and Naveen (Kapil Talkwalkar) stood out to me because they constantly made me laugh and helped relieve the tension that was building up throughout the series.
One of the best parts of this show was how it made me question everyone, even characters like Rob, who seemed to be trustworthy at first. All the different plot points were so misleading to the true killer, which we still haven’t figured out. At the end of each episode, new clues or twists were introduced, making it difficult for me to stop watching.
I have always been obsessed with mystery shows set in suburbia, such as “Desperate Housewives” and “Good Girls,” because they both reveal the secrets that were hidden in their “normal” neighborhoods. Funnily enough, the series was filmed on the same backlot at Universal Studios Hollywood, an iconic neighborhood set that has been used for numerous television shows throughout the years.
I would rate this show a five out of five stars because it drew me in immediately and kept me intrigued until the very end. Luckily, it has been renewed for a second season, so the cliffhanger ending can finally be explained.
Overall, “The Burbs” is the perfect balance of comedy and horror, making it a must-watch for mystery lovers. With the unexpected twists, eerie suburban setting and unique characters, this series kept me invested until the very end of the season.
