On Sunday, Feb. 8, the New England Patriots will meet the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California in Super Bowl LX. This is the second time these teams will face off in the championship match.
The majority, if not all, football fans recall how Super Bowl XLIX ended between the two sides. Rather than hand the ball off to star running back Marshawn Lynch on the one-yard line, the Hawks decided to throw the ball. Russell Wilson’s pass was intercepted by undrafted rookie Malcolm Butler, securing the come-from-behind 28-24 victory for the Pats’ fourth title.
According to ESPN Analytics, the Seahawks hold 60.2% odds to lift the Lombardi Trophy. This is their fourth appearance in entity history and would be their second win.
Starting quarterback Sam Darnold has had quite the turnaround story to get to where he is. Selected third overall in the 2018 draft by the New York Jets, Darnold had a record of 13-35 as a starter in NY and then mainly served as a backup in Carolina and San Francisco.
After landing a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings, Darnold was named the starter and went on to have the best season of his career. He led the team to 14 wins and a wild-card berth. The convincing campaign intrigued the Seahawks to replace veteran Geno Smith with him in 2025.
Their bet definitely paid off. Darnold became the second quarterback in NFL history to lead two different franchises to 14 wins in back-to-back years, joining the illustrious Tom Brady and lifting the Seahawks to the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
The connection between Darnold and MVP-caliber wide-receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba clicked right from the jump. In the NFC Championship game against the Rams, Smith-Njigba caught ten passes for 153 yards and a touchdown.
Coached by Mike Macdonald in his second year in charge, the Seahawks have constructed the best all-around defense in the league matched with a threatening offense. They are going to be tough to beat.
Coming in as the underdogs for the first time in nine consecutive Super Bowls that they’ve been favored, the Patriots have the chance to be the only NFL team to win seven Lombardi trophies. New England completely erased last year’s disgrace of a season, bringing in new head coach Mike Vrabel from Tennessee along with a bunch of other talented players to build around the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft, quarterback Drake Maye.
The rookie flashed his strong arm, throwing accuracy and patient play-style from his debut in week three to the end of the losing campaign. This new edition of the Patriots could see them reclaiming dominance as a dynasty if they were to pull off the upset.
New England’s defense compares well to Seattle’s, both elite in high-pressure on the defense line. The Seahawks allowed the fewest points per game (16.4), while the Patriots allowed the fourth fewest (18.8). On the offensive side of the ball, Maye led the league in completion percentage (72%), passer rating (113.5) and yards per attempt (8.93). He is also proficient on the ground, rushing for 65 yards and a touchdown in the AFC Championship game against the Broncos.
The inexperience of both quarterbacks, youthfulness of the rosters and juggernaut defensive units will make this an entertaining watch.
