On Dec. 26, senior John Boyle announced his commitment to Trinity College Wrestling. Boyle was attracted to the school by their academics and wrestling program, and immediately felt a connection.
“Trinity College is great in academics and is close to home,” Boyle told The Fanscotian. “I wanted a school I believed I could wrestle at a high level in the future and Trinity was one of the few schools that met all the requirements I had.”
Trinity College, located in Hartford, Connecticut, is a private liberal arts college that offers majors including political science, economics and psychology. Wrestling at the Division III level, the Trinity Bantams compete in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), facing schools such as Bridgewater State, Plymouth State and Western New England. Boyle is excited to make his mark as a Bantam, and hit the mat once he is in college.
“My goal in collegiate wrestling is to be an Academic All American and to be successful in school as well as wrestling,” Boyle said.
Suiting up at the varsity level for the SPF Raiders wrestling team since his sophomore year, Boyle has wrestled at the 175, 190 and 215 lbs level. Boyle was crowned the Union County Champion at the 190 lbs mark during his junior season, becoming the first Raider to claim the title since the 2021-2022 season. Coming into the tournament as the No. 6 seed, Boyle completed the underdog story by finishing on top.
Boyle specifically remembers a match against Rahway during senior night in his sophomore season, where he felt the energy of the crowd reach him on the mat.
“My favorite memory of SPF wrestling was winning my match against Rahway my sophomore year,” Boyle said. “I just remembered the senior night crowd going wild after I was one of the few victories that night.”
Boyle is a major part in one of the most participated sports in SPF, and helped bring the Raiders to an overall record of 17-9 in the 2023-2024 season.
In addition to wrestling, Boyle is a member of both the varsity football and lacrosse teams. Already competing in his final wrestling season as a Raider, Boyle will miss his teammates once he is at Trinity College.
“I will miss my teammates the most as some of my teammates like Michael Cantwell and Tristan Sirmans have been with me since I started wrestling and it will definitely be very different next year without them on my team,” Boyle said.
