On Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, the curtain rose for the 76th Golden Globe Awards. The competition was tough, as 2018 had many mind-blowing movies and TV shows that were nominated. Only five movies are nominated every year for each category, so upset and excitement are common themes before and after the awards are announced.
Every year, the major categories people look out for include Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Drama and Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for both actors and actresses.
In the category of Best Motion Picture, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a Queen-dedicated biography, won in drama, while “The Green Book” won as a musical or comedy.
Rami Malek won Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Drama for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Glenn Close also won the same award in the actress category for her performance as Joan Castleman in “The Wife.”
As for Best Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Christian Bale claimed the award for his role in “Vice” as Dick Cheney, while Olivia Coleman snagged the award for her role as Queen Anne in “The Favourite.”
Other awards giving out included Best Supporting Performance, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Original Song and Best Foreign Language Film.
In television, awards included Best Television Series, won by “The Americans,”Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, given to “Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, snagged by Rachel Brosnahan for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
While the 76 Golden Globes come to a close, many more open up. Several other film and TV ceremonies will take place in many days to come including the Oscars on Feb. 14.
