Over the years, the pop-music world has been blessed with talented individuals. Household names like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande have paved the way for many young stars and can even be labeled as today’s “Queens of Pop.” Yet in 2021, a new name has emerged and there are already talks that she may be as successful as Swift herself.

Who is this person you ask? No one other than Miss Olivia Rodrigo.

The recently turned 18-year-old has already taken social media by storm with her two debut songs “Driver’s License” and “Deja Vu,” which premiered at the beginning of April 2021.

Now, you may be wondering how Rodrigo got her start to teenage stardom. She started her career on Disney Channel, a network that has blossomed familiar names such as Selena Gomez, Demi Lavato and Miley Cyrus. First appearing on the show “Bizaardvark,” Rodrigo then moved on to star as Nina Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ series “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.”

This was when fans discovered her incredible vocals in songs like “All I Want” and “Just For A Moment” with co-star and love interest Joshua Basset.

In Jan. 2021, Rodrigo released “Driver’s License,” her first song as an independent artist. Immediately, the ballad broke records, including becoming the most-streamed non-holiday song ever in a single day on Jan. 11. Soon after, it surpassed that record with over 30 million streams on Jan. 14. The song was an instant hit on social media platforms such as Tik Tok and Instagram.

Most recently, Rodrigo put out a new song titled “Deja Vu” which critics say is just as a hit as her previous songs.

Once you press play, you instantly hear the sound of chimes and a harmonious melody. Rodrigo sets the scene of what seems like summer love.

“Car rides to Malibu/strawberry ice cream/one spoon for two/and trading jackets/Laughing ‘bout how small it looks on you,”

She goes on to reminisce over the memories they shared.

Watching reruns of ‘Glee’/being annoying/singing in harmony.”  Already from the opening lines, Rodrigo is painting a charming picture for the listeners.

However, the lyrics later take a more serious turn as she wonders if her previous partner is having as much fun with their new love as the two of them once did.

She sings:

“So when you gonna tell her/that we did that too?/She thinks it’s special/but it’s overused/That was our place/I found it first/I made the jokes/you tell to her/when she’s with you/Do you get deja vu when she’s with you?”

For fans, Rodrigo’s music is not just about teenage breakups. Her songs are liberating to teenage girls because they properly address the emotions girls suppress in young love.

Already, Rodrigo is being compared to pop legend Taylor Swift. When you break it down, it’s almost uncanny how similar their love ballads are with their breakup catchy lyrics.

Rodrigo is set to release her debut album “SOUR” on May 21. 2021 to all streaming platforms and will be available to purchase. She will also appear in season two of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” which premiers May 14. 2020 on Disney+.
