The Raiders boys basketball team (1-2) came out victorious for the first time this season as they took care of Somerville, With strong efforts from junior Damon Schumann and senior Christian Piesch, SPF was able to win comfortably, 64-40. Rebounding, fast breaks, and Somerville’s discombobulated defense were the many reasons as to why the Raiders were able to win.

Junior guard Jaden Carter scored 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Carter believes that this game was a pivotal moment early on in the season.

“I think this was a good win, brought up by our energy,” Carter said. “So now we can go into our next game with some confidence, and hopefully get another win on Saturday against Summit. We just got to use this win to keep pushing through the season.”

The Raiders Energy and focus allowed them to continue to push the ball down the court and look for open shots. There was a very minimal amount of turnovers as the ball movement was on display.

Schumann was also pleased with the Raiders performance.

“I think the team played really well today and we played our style of basketball,” Schumann said. “We can take away [from the game] that if we play good defense and attack the glass it will give us good opportunities to get out and run and get easy baskets.”

Rebounding was an ultimate reason as to how they managed to win big tonight. Schumann led the way with a 10 point, 11 rebound double-double.

“I think I played really well today with attacking the glass and being able to push the ball to guards to start transition,” Schumann said. “This helped us get out and run which is the type of basketball we need to play in order to put ourselves in a better position to win.”

Carter gave a lot of credit to Schumann and the rest of the team for their performance.

“I think we were hustling, getting after the boards and trying our best to get the ball out in transition,” Carter said. “A key part was Damon grabbing 11 boards, I think that was a big boost.”

Credit Schumann and Piesch for their job of getting rebounds and kicking it out to open teammates who were able to hit worthy shots to help seal the deal.

SPF was able to take advantage of Somerville’s lack of effort on defense, as SPF contributed many fast break points throughout the game.

SPF will look to reach .500 on the season as they travel to Summit on Saturday, Feb. 6, to take on Summit at 3:00 p.m.
