The Lady Raiders Basketball team won on their senior night, Thursday, Feb. 7 against the Union Farmers in a nail-biter ending, with a final score of 35-29. The seniors that were celebrated that night were: Stephanie DeVizio, Hannah Lyman, Abby Saperstein, Morgan Wilson, Meghan Duthie, Amy Magrino and Eboni Davis. The starting five for Thursday’s game were seniors DeVizio, Lyman and Saperstein, and sophomores Corinne Lyght and Ryann Wall.
The first quarter started out shaky with Union taking the early lead, but the Raiders fought back quickly, causing Union to take a time out. Once the Raiders evened the score, the rest of the quarter was dominated by the Raiders on both sides of the court with the home team leading by six at the end.
The Lady Raiders got off to an explosive start in the second quarter with a steal from Lyman and the first basket of the quarter scored by Saperstein. The end was just as exciting, with threes by DeVizio and sophomore Maddie StaRosa. At the half the Raiders were up by at nine with a score of 20-11.
The second half of the game proved to be harder for the team, being out scored in both quarters. The young team was able to hold onto their lead however, playing hard and tough. The Union Farmers were able to cut the Raiders’ lead down to five points with 2:44 left in the game but the Raiders ultimately claimed the win with a final score of 35-29.
“We played really good defense as a whole,” StaRosa said. “It was really fun playing with the seniors on senior night and taking the win.”
Although it wasn’t a high scoring game both teams played hard until the final buzzer. The scoring for the Raiders was well rounded and the girls’ won with a group effort. The Lady Raiders held the lead almost the whole game and only trailed in the first minutes of the first quarter. The next game is on Friday Feb. 15, away at Arthur L. Johnson High School.
