On Saturday, January 20th, 2018, a ceremony was held at the First Baptist Church of Westfield in honor of freshman Derek Porter becoming an Eagle Scout.
The ceremony featured many people speaking on behalf of all Derek has accomplished in his time as a Boy Scout, including many service projects and high adventure camping trips.
Derek was not only recognized by leaders from his Boy Scout troop, Troop 104, but also received letters of congratulations from people from the township of Scotch Plains and even politicians from Washington. He was even presented with a flag flown over the Capitol Building in honor of his achievement.
Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Boy Scouts. Achieving this rank requires the earning of 21 merit badges, completing a service project and actively serving in the troop for 6 months. Derek has served as quartermaster and senior patrol leader of Troop 104.
Derek is honored to be presented with this award and is excited to give back to the troop in the future.
