All high school students love going home after a long day and taking a nap for even just an half hour to feel a little better. “I can’t wait to go home and take a nap” is heard throughout the halls all day long, especially around two o’clock when students are almost allowed to leave and go home.
Taking naps at school is an idea stressed by lots of students. If students have an exam and stay awake the night before until around 12am, waking up at 6 or 7 am will be tricky. Throughout the school day, these kids are slowly closing their eyes because of the 6 hours of sleep they got that make it difficult to focus.
Focusing in school is a must, so with the power of the nap, focusing comes easier to students. According to sleepfoundation.org, a short 30 minute nap is recommended for short-term alertness and performance.
Naps restore alertness, reduce mistakes and accidents and enhance overall performance. By taking a 40-minute nap, your alertness will extend to a few hours later in the day. Providing a nap in school around 11a.m. is a smart method because the student will be able to perform at a motivated and energetic pace throughout the rest of the school day.
Senior Francesca DiFabio is strongly against the fact that the school doesn’t provide a time to nap or get rest.
“Sleeping in school would be a good idea because students would be energetic and motivated to work after getting the rest they need throughout the day,” Difabio said.
Sleep plays a huge role in thinking and learning. When you lack sleep, these processes slow down and your brain doesn’t function as it should. Without enough sleep, you are often more forgetful.
In 2009, a variety of different American and French researchers determined that brain events called “sharp wave ripples” are responsible for consolidating memory.
Senior Elizabeth Lestrange believes that naps during the day aren’t a good use of the school day of learning.
“The school day would end later in the day, most likely, and everyone would be cranky and in bad moods when they wake up.” said Lestrange.
Some people agree that students should learn to manage their time well and make sure they sleep the right amount of hours, but with all the extracurriculars done and homework given, it is almost impossible to achieve the healthy amount of sleep.
Taking a power nap during the day at school would give students the ability to wake up and be prepared for the rest of their busy day without being exhausted. If our high school were to allow nap time, students would be well rested and focused to work better at their work.
