Following a trip to Kean University, the Scotch Plains Fanwood DECA chapter competed in the preliminary round of the three part competition. Led by advisor Ms. Fitzgibbon, 48 students qualified for states, six of whom received first place in their category.
DECA is a club that encourages high schoolers to explore the realm of business and marketing through tests, role plays, and prepared presentations. Students select an event they want to focus on such as Restaurant and Food Service Management, Accessories and Apparel Marketing, or Sports Marketing. At regionals, students are given a prompt addressing a problem that may occur within their area of focus and the students have ten minutes to prepare a solution proposal and then present it to a judge. DECA is the perfect club for future business moguls to practice their formal skills.
Out of the many schools in the region, SPF did an excellent job as usual and many students qualified for the next round of competition. Freshman Mary Fossasecca participated in DECA regionals for the first time in the event called Principles of Marketing.
“My first DECA experience went really well, I was a little nervous before I got there but the judges were really nice and they made it feel very relaxed and professional,” said Fossaceca. “I would definitely encourage other students to join DECA because it’s great practice for when we interview for jobs when we get older and it exposes us to different fields in business.”
Out of 158 participants, 48 students will be advancing to states.
