On November 18, 2015, the World Language Honor Society inducted 48 members from the French, Italian, and Spanish Languages. The night was filled with guest speakers representing the five languages here at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School as well as an overall respect for immersing oneself in a language.
The night began with a speech from MC and German Honor Society President Simon Oster. Soon after, each language’s respective honor society inducted their members. Each language opened their induction with speeches from their officers, followed by every inductee lighting a flame from the mother candle. Finally, all of the inductees said a pledge in their respective languages.
Before the eventful night, however, individual members had to fulfill rigid criteria. In order to be inducted, one must have an A or higher in an academic language course or and A- or higher in an accelerated language course for two consecutive years as well as complete service activities.
Regarding the induction, World Language Supervisor Linda Materna said, “I think it went very smoothly. I was very impressed; everything, this was the year that everything just fell into place.”
