On Thursday, Oct. 30, the Union Latina, SALSA and Bilingual Connections clubs are hosting a closing celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School cafeteria from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This is the second year that they are holding this event.
“The idea is to make the community aware of [aspects] of our culture, like food and music,” Spanish Honor Society and Bilingual Connections club advisor Jennifer Infante told The Fanscotian. “The goal is that [people] come to learn and experience a little bit [of everything].”
Beginning in 1968 as a week-long commemoration, the honoring of Hispanic culture expanded to be nationally recognized from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 every year under President Reagan in 1988.
Attendees can expect a variety of dishes, dances and music, encompassing the diversity of the Hispanic community. There will be a professional salsa instructor and a station to decorate an altar for Día de los Muertos, offering authentic experiences of cherished traditions.
The community is encouraged to contribute by setting and cleaning up the cafeteria, bringing food and drinks and volunteering to lead activities and serve guests.
The event is still open to SPFHS students, friends and family. Registration is due by Friday, Oct. 17, using this link to sign up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Pdx1kTUjTHp1UUbQsmmY3LV-QtZIlO8M390u4uZM-88/edit#responses.
“We plan to host it every year, making it bigger and bigger to the point that we could possibly bring the entire community here and at all the schools,” Infante said. “Every year, we try to incorporate other things to represent the diversity.”
