This week, Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School students and staff will be participating in the Student Government Association’s (SGA) annual Spirit Week. There is an assigned theme for each day, and students will dress accordingly. The week will conclude with a football game on Friday, Oct. 3, and the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, Oct. 4. All of these events allow students to exhibit school spirit and be a part of the community.
Every year, SGA brainstorms outfit theme ideas for the week leading up to the Homecoming football game. This year, the theme line-up is as follows:
Start the week off with Raider pride on Monday by wearing blue and white. Tuesday will be a battle of Country Club vs. Country. Students will have the choice to dress up in preppy outfits or cowboy attire. The next morning will be minimal effort for students and staff since Wednesday is Pajama Day.
On Thursday, school will be closed in observance of Yom Kippur. In anticipation of the football game on Friday, students will wear pink to school.
“I’m probably only going to participate in dressing up on Friday,” junior Emily Hyland said. “Most people don’t dress up anymore so I don’t want to be out of place.”
Additionally, on Friday, the football team will play John F. Kennedy Memorial High School-Iselin under the Friday Night Lights at 7 p.m. The student section’s theme is pink out, just like the Spirit Week theme.
The past two years, the football team has beaten their upcoming opponent, but Kennedy, 2-2, has been having a stronger season than the Raiders, going 1-2.
The Homecoming Court was announced this past week and students will be able to vote for the Homecoming royalty via email up until Oct. 3. The students on the court are nominated by staff members for excellence in academics and character. The royalty will be announced during halftime at the football game.
Saturday night at 7 p.m., SPFHS will open its doors to attendees for “The Great Gatsby” themed Homecoming dance. Tickets for the event are only sold beforehand, and the last chance to purchase one is Thursday, Oct. 2. Tickets can be purchased online or in school on Oct. 1 during lunch outside of the cafeteria.
The dance takes place in the New Gym, where it will be decorated with lavish decor to match the theme. There will be a DJ for the students to dance to on the dance floor. There’s also going to be a photo booth as well as food and drink provided by the school. The dress code is semi-formal.
“Although we are only a month into school, the workload has been intense,” SGA board member Addy Richie said. “It’s nice to have a series of events to look forward to.”
