We Were Liars premiered on Prime Video on June 18, 2025. It tells the story of the wealthy Sinclair family who spends their summers on a private island off the coast of Massachusetts.
At the center of the story is Cadence Sinclair, who slowly unravels the truth about what really happened during the summer she was 15
The show was created from the bestselling novel by E. Lockhart, We Were Liars blends mystery, romance and tragedy as Candace and her cousins Jonny, Mirren and best friend Gat become known as the “Liars”.
In the beginning, Cadence is introduced as the oldest grandchild, set to inherit the family’s legacy. After suffering a head injury in “Summer Fifteen,” she begins experiencing memory loss and migraines.
Over the episodes, she struggles to remember what happened that summer, and the truth is revealed piece by piece.
The main plot twist comes when Candance realizes her cousin Jonny, Mirren and Gat actually died in a fire that she herself helped set. Believing they were making a statement against the greed and control of the Sincalir family, the Liars planned to burn down one of the houses on the island.
But the fire went horribly wrong, taking the lives of the three she loves most, leaving Cadence as the only survivor.
The performances in We Were Liars make the story even more powerful. Candance, played by Emily Alyn Lind, captures the confusion, guilt and heartbreak perfectly. The actors portraying Johnny, Mirren and Gat give strong, emotional performances that make the eventual twist even more devastating.
Their chemistry as a group makes you believe in their bond right away, which makes the loss hit harder.
The cinematography stands out too. Sinclair island is filmed beautifully, wide shots of the ocean, sunsets and the grand family house.
But when Candence’s memory struggles or trauma flashbacks hit, you can feel what is going on as well. This visual storytelling builds the tension leading up to the shocking reveal.
One of the most haunting scenes is when Cadence finally remembers the night of the fire. The camera shows her realizing what she did while hearing the voice of her cousins one last time.
Another emotional moment is when she accepts the truth and says goodbye to them, knowing she has to live with the guilt but also carry their memories forward.
Overall, We Were Liars is a mix of family drama, teenage rebellion, romance and mystery, all wrapped into a tragic story about greed, loyalty and loss.
I would give We Were Liars a four out of five stars. It’s gripping, emotional, and shocking, but it’s also heartbreaking.
If you like suspense, mystery and stories with unforgettable twists, We Were Liars is definitely worth watching.
