Every September during the first week of school, students enter the doors of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School excited to learn, meet new people, and connect with teachers. But above all, students are most passionate about something that happens outside of school doors – Friday Night Lights.
To prepare for the big game on Friday, Sept. 5 vs. Rahway, SPFHS held its annual pep rally to spark excitement in the SPFHS community. For starters, the band played loud and proud while students made their way to their sections of the bleachers, followed by the cheerleaders doing their hype routine in the middle of Perry Tyson field. During the second half of the pep rally, the focus turned away from the football game and focused on the school year ahead.
Student leaders and administrators spoke, informing students about what to expect in this upcoming school year. The student government presented themselves with their new positions and responsibilities, assuring everyone that it will be a good year ahead.
Senior class president Paul Boyle spoke with The Fanscotian regarding the pep rally which he talked at last week.
“My main message to the student body during the pep rally was that you could really find yourself at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School,” Boyle said. “Even if you come in a little bit nervous, there are a lot of things to do here.”
During the pep rally, there were some setbacks and hurdles to overcome for the speech makers. Aside from talking in front of the nearly 1,600 students that make up SPFHS, Boyle and some other speakers had trouble adjusting to the microphones.
“[It was] just an unexpected moment,” Boyle said. “I noticed the mic was delayed by a couple seconds, and that threw me off but I overcame that challenge.”
With lots of confidence from Boyle and his crew, impressive routines from the cheerleaders and timeless playing from the band, the pep rally was a successful start to the school year and an exciting preview for the future.
