Thirty-one-year-old conservative advocate Charlie Kirk was assassinated at a political event on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk, a long time ally of President Donald Trump, and his political movement, was speaking on gun violence when he was shot once by a gunman. The alleged gunman is still at large as of Thursday, Sept. 11.
The FBI has encouraged public tips of photos/evidence to help with finding the assailant, having no official warrant out for their arrest. Both political parties have immediately spoken out against any acts of political violence, with many government officials coming forward to condemn the shooting.
During the minutes that followed the attack, many waited for an eventual update about Kirk’s health. At 4:40 p.m. Trump announced his passing on Truth Social. Trump declared that Kirk will posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and that all flags will be flown at half-staff until Sept. 14 in honor of Kirk.
Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative advocacy group. The group has received backing from major Republican donors and many times hosted the president during and in between his campaigns. Kirk is survived by his wife Erika, and his two children.
