Since I first discovered his music back in early 2023, Malcolm Todd has quickly become one of my favorite artists because of songs like “Roommates” and “Sweet Boy” that have such a rhythmically groovy vibe to them. Over the past few years, Todd has continued to release catchy single after catchy single, and after the release of his “Sweet Boy” mixtape Todd announced that he’d be working on his self-titled debut album.
After months of anticipation built upon the extremely popular singles of “Chest Pain (I Love),” “Bleed” (featuring Omar Apollo), and “Cheer Me On” Malcolm Todd released his self-titled project on April, 4, 2025.
My Five Favorite Songs (in no particular order):
- “Make Me a Better Man”
- “Cheer Me On”
- “Chest Pain (I Love)”
- “Bleed” (featuring Omar Apollo)
- “Florence”
Malcolm Todd’s self-titled album has to be one of the smoothest and most consistent debut albums I’ve ever heard. From the very first track “Harry Styles,” I was hooked because of Todd’s interesting lyrics discussing the pressure of the media for him to meet the standard of a typical “pop” or “indie” musician. I was really impressed by how well the entire album flows and connects together, as it’s rare to find a project where you don’t feel like skipping a track or where the tracklist has no cohesion whatsoever nowadays. Listening to this album from top to bottom, it felt more like a trip through Todd’s psyche and emotions as opposed to a jumbled playlist of songs. As well, Todd’s instrumental choices were a highlight of his debut album as each beat holds a sense of passion and emotion that isn’t too flashy or overproduced as it maintains a healthy balance of pop, R&B and indie vibes. As expected, Todd’s guitar work is outstanding especially during his solo on “Make Me a Better Man” that transports me into another dimension with how euphoric it is. It’s safe to say that Malcolm Todd is here to stay in the music industry with this stellar debut album.
