On March 14, Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School opened its doors to welcome senior citizens from the Scotch Plains-Fanwood community. The Student Government Association, otherwise known as SGA, ran the event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. providing games, food and entertainment. The annual event allows members of the community to connect with others and form new friendships.
Rachel Love took over the advisor role of the club this past year. She was the one who was responsible for orchestrating the whole day. To celebrate the event, the club organized a series of events that started with speeches. Members of the SGA board and the school came together to speak on the importance of the day and to honor the annual tradition.
“The planning process has been going on for months,” Love said. “Right now, we split SGA into teams to help plan different aspects of the event. It definitely takes a village!”
The majority of the day is focused on cross-generational connections for the students and attendees. Around the red and black decorated gym to seem like a night out, each student is paired with an attendee. In correlation with the red and black theme, there were decks of cards at all the tables. There were even large rounds of Bingo and Name That Tune with the high school jazz band, the Moonglowers, performing songs.
Scattered throughout the day, groups from the school performed at the event. The cheerleaders executed their routine, Raider Robotics presented their machine and Rep Theatre gave a remarkable performance of “Freaky Friday.” The food was provided by the Pomptonian Food Service, which offered breakfast and lunch.
“This day is to show the senior citizens the beauty of high school and all of the things we offer. I’ve had a great time chatting with the visitors and seeing the smiles on their faces,” junior SGA member Addison Richie said.
