From the newest “life changing” skin care products, to must-have new gadgets, social media is the home to it all. Lately, every video you scroll past is some sort of ad or promotion for the greatest, shiniest, newest and–of course–the most expensive trending product. The excitement of unboxing a long awaited package or trying the newest trending thing is no stranger to many people.
Influencers’ flashy videos and amazing results make us feel like we need the newest makeup, skincare or gadget. In the world of social media, it’s hard to see the truth about these products and it really makes us wonder- Is it worth it?
The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer
If you are into the newest beauty or hair trends, then you have most definitely heard about the Dyson hair dryer. This gadget has been trending on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok for over a year now. All of those influencers with picture perfect hair seem to owe it to this one product.
Now, what you all have been waiting for: the price. This beloved hair dryer comes in at $429.99 on Dyson’s very own website. Although this product has been paraded all over social media, let’s see if it’s really worth it.
Although yes, $429.99 is a lot of money, I can assure you that the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is an investment worth while. Not only did it leave my hair looking smooth, shiny and frizz free, the drying process was so enjoyable. Personally, when doing my hair, I used the dryer itself without the attachments and still got a really nice finish. This product definitely gets its name for a reason, as I was able to finish styling my hair in around 20 minutes.
It is true that compared to other hair dryers on the market, this one is exponentially more expensive. But, I can agree with social media that this not your average blow dryer. If you are someone who styles their hair often, the Dyson really is a must have, and in this case, social media did not lie.
Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm
Summer Fridays lip balm has been trending all over social media for more than a year now. Every known influencer who is big on “get ready with me” videos swears by it. So, is it worth it?
This product comes in at $24, which does not seem horrible, but for a small lip balm, its on the pricier end. Although the price can seem discouraging, it is hard to resist giving into these products. This lip balm is available in a variety of flavors and shades. The flavors include Vanilla, Sweet Mint, Pink Sugar, Birthday Cake, Iced Coffee, Vanilla Beige, Brown Sugar, Cherry and Poppy.
When trying this product for myself, I picked out the flavor Pink Sugar, and $24 dollars later, this 0.5 oz lip balm appeared on my doorstep. After minutes of applying this balm, my lips were immediately moisturized. Not only did this product hydrate my lips, but it also served as a lip gloss. This lip balm is perfect for anyone who wants to keep their lips hydrated, but also wants that pretty, glossed look- so yes, it is worth it.
Charlotte Tilbury: Hollywood Flawless Filter
For a few years now, Flawless Filter has been all over my feed; many influencers swear by it, using it in their everyday routines. This foundation-like makeup product has been given so much praise- but is it really worth it?
Although many may claim for this product to be their “holy grail,” it does not come at a cheap price. On the Charlotte Tilbury website, this product is listed at $49.00, $16.33/10ml. It is said to give flawless skin, a glowy base and a perfect finish. This product is available in 12 different shades, all said to give that “must have” glow.
Now to be perfectly honest, this product is not high on my ranking. After ordering it over a year ago, it has mostly been collecting dust on my shelf. It’s not like this product is all lies, it just was not for me. Although it did give me that glowy finish, it felt very uncomfortable on the face. Instead of giving me that clean feeling, it left my face feeling greasy. Another negative of this product was more due to its effects after using. After using this product for a few days, or even keeping it on for a long night, I noticed breakouts and uneven skin. Although this may not be the case for everyone, it definitely turns me away from buying it again, or even in this case, finishing the bottle.
If you want to spend an absurd amount of money on a low coverage foundation that you could probably get for one-fourth of the price, then you should really check out Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter. But, in the end, this product really is overhyped and will not live up to its name.
Although it is tempting to buy the newest product that is being paraded all over your feed, social media is not always the best place to pour all your money out on. Although some products really do live up to their name, it is still questionable whether or not they are just some quick trends that will end up in everyone’s trash bin by the next month.
