January to March is when life really does seem to go down hill for many. Whether it’s due to stress from work or school, the outside world or just our own thoughts, winter is not always easy. As the merry vibe of December starts to fade away, we are left with the sting of winter. Seasonal Depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder is a real thing that impacts more people than you could imagine. Although it can be hard to look for the light at the end of the tunnel, there are ways to cope with these struggles. Finding joy in the little things is crucial: that warm cup of coffee, a laugh with your loved ones, sitting by the fire till it’s dark. These are all things that can make each day a little bit brighter. Instead of waiting for the springtime, trying to cherish the winter time can really make a change.
Make each day just a little bit brighter
By making your day brighter, you might assume I just mean making it “better,” but no. Actually brightening up your day through sunlight can have such an impact on your mental state. According to News In Health, “Reduced sunlight in fall and winter can disrupt your body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm.” Due to this, it is easy to fall into depression and sadness. By going on walks, or opening your blinds early in the morning, you are setting yourself up for success. Enjoy the outdoors although it is cold, learn to enjoy them in a new way. Spend time outside, trying new activities like winter hiking, skiing, running or just breathing in the fresh air. Although it feels like being in the sun is such a small act, it really can make all the difference.
Focus on yourself
Focusing on ourselves and giving ourselves attention is really something we should always be doing, but sometimes this act gets lost within our busy lives. The slower pace of the winter is really a time to focus on this. Do things for you! Take care of your body. Use this time to reach your fitness and health goals, in order to make yourself even more proud in seasons to come. Focusing on nutritional meals and exercise are not only good for your body, but they can give you purpose and drive. Having goals is a great way to avoid the seasonal slump, as they keep you sharp and striving towards something more.
Keep Social
Although in the winter it is easy to hibernate and ignore everyone, hiding from socialization only makes things worse. Sitting home all weekend in the dark is an easy way to feel the ice of winter. Going out and making friends, forming connections, is a great way to distract yourself. Finding the time to spend time with your loved ones and giving them the attention they deserve can really improve a blue mood. Socialization can reduce stress and help the winter months fly by.
Get a new hobby
If you have not noticed, the key to getting through the winter is really to distract yourself. The best way to do that is focusing on a hobby. Whether it’s meditation, yoga, weight lifting, drawing, cooking or reading, it really does not matter. Whatever activity is able to occupy and interest you is the one to go with. Not only can this hobby be a great distraction, but it could be something that you could really learn to love. Maybe you discover that you are a master chef, or an amazing artist or maybe you just find a way to fill the time. Either way, a hobby is a great way to hate winter just a little bit less, and to love it just a little bit more.
It’s okay to ask for help
Although all the ways above are great ways to enjoy the winter season, truth be told, they are not a cure for everything. Sometimes the feelings are just too strong and we are unable to shake it. If these few tips are not enough to get you through that winter slump, that is okay. Asking for help can only benefit you and get you through the hard times. Whether it is speaking to someone you trust, a friend, a parent or a professional, it can never hurt to ask for help. The winter blues is a common feeling that many can relate to, so talking to your peers is always beneficial.
The little things really do make a difference in getting through the dead of winter. Although it can be hard to look on the bright side, letting yourself be happy is something that is crucial in getting through the snowy season. Make sure to say goodbye to those winter blues and really enjoy the quiet this year.
