Since the early months of the 2024-2025 school year, several new policies have been introduced to SPFHS. Phone caddies now hang on the walls of every classroom, and students are instructed to leave their mobile devices in them for the duration of class. All students have also been required to carry ID cards on themselves while entering and exiting the building or leaving class.
In a December email, SPFHS Principal Dr. Warren Haynes announced an addition to these parameters: students will now be instructed to wear plastic lanyards displaying their ID cards at all times while they roam the campus.
The notice, sent to all students and faculty, stated that the lanyards will “provide a next-level of support for our school’s security, as both staff and students will now be easy to identify throughout school days and during emergencies.”
The lanyards will be royal blue in color, to coordinate with the school color of SPF. Starting Feb. 3, students must wear their ID lanyards while they are anywhere in the building. This rule is being enforced to ensure there is a safe learning environment at SPFHS.
Rules related to ID card scanning will remain the same, with the only difference being that students will now have their ID cards on them constantly throughout the school day. Many students have heard about the lanyard addition. Some students don’t mind, while others are a bit hesitant about the recently developed guideline.
“Many students will inevitably find it easier to locate and remember their IDs with the lanyard attached,” Hynes said.
In many ways, wearing lanyards can pose benefits for students by allowing them to have simple and constant access to their ID cards. Nonetheless, SPFHS students will find ways to adjust to this new system and be part of a safer community.
“We had a good amount of students who were enthusiastic and eager to pick up a lanyard when it had been first announced in the beginning, but I would say in general it’s a mix of feelings,” SPFHS secretary Jasmin Hassan said. “Some students seem almost relieved that they have somewhere to put their IDs and avoid getting it lost.”
Lanyards are now available for pickup in the main office. Students may start wearing them ahead of time, but will not be required to until Feb. 3.
