On Nov. 11, 2024, SPFHS junior Paul Boyle released his newest short film titled “Paul Boyle School Cop” after weeks of writing, filming and editing.
“Paul Boyle School Cop” marks Boyle’s first short film since “Agent Kill” which was released on Feb. 22, 2024. Boyle took inspiration from some of his favorite pieces of cinematic and television media such as “Breaking Bad” and “Paul Blart Mall Cop.”
“The movie making process is very fun, since you start off by thinking of multiple ideas,” Boyle told The Fanscotian. “I normally base my movies off of other [shows and movies], [in the past] I’ve based movies off of Rocky and [Paul Boyle School Cop] is based off of ‘Paul Blart Mall Cop,’ and a little bit of ‘Breaking Bad.’ Coming up with an idea, writing the script and coming up with jokes to throw in the movie are my favorite parts of the process.”
As President of the AV Club at the high school, Boyle gets many of his friends, classmates and fellow club members involved in his projects.
“It’s a lot of fun creating movies with my friends and classmates because I try to get a wide range of people in my movies, to make sure that more people try to watch it,” Boyle said. “Sometimes funny stuff happens after I release a movie too, like remembering quotes from my movies. Most recently, Joseph Lambert was talking about ‘Agent Kill’ and he said one of the famous lines from the movie, ‘a starving man has no carrots.’ Those moments and memories with my friends make the movie-making process a great experience.”
While the movie-making process can be thrilling, Boyle also acknowledged the time commitment and energy needed to write, record and produce a short film.
“My average short film takes at least 24 hours in total to make,” Boyle said. “I used to do all the filming in one day but that became very tiring. Now, I break up filming into multiple days stretching a couple hours and the filming process takes anywhere from six to eight hours. Writing the script for the film takes at least 12 hours and editing takes at least eight hours, too. Although the movie-making process can be fun, it’s also a little stressful and time-consuming.”
