Every year as October comes around, so does Breast Cancer Awareness Month. From Tue, Oct. 1 to Thu, Oct. 31 of 2024, many charities and foundations work hard to raise money for continued research and a cure for breast cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was nationally established in October 1985, starting as a week-long campaign and then turning into the month it is today. This was all started by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries, along with some other sponsors. The month is devoted to supporting everyone breast cancer has affected and educating others to show that same support in their communities.
“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a great opportunity to get together and support one another… It’s great at Scotch Plains, there’s so many different events that happen to support one another–different athletic teams wearing pink for awareness and different clubs like SMAC,” Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s SMAC Club advisor Marc Fabiano said.
Originally, this campaign was established to promote getting mammograms to fight against breast cancer and educate on early detection; even today, those same goals are being carried out. Through this month of recognition, the community will continue to come together in support of one another and will work towards the fight against breast cancer.
