Think of a hero in your life. It can be a superhero or a person in your current life that you believe is a hero. What if they weren’t there for you? How would your life be different? Speaking for myself and other children that were in the hospital at a young age, I would say my hero is the doctors and caregivers who were with me when I was sick.
During my treatment, I was supported by The Valerie Fund, a non-profit organization located in Maplewood, NJ that was established in 1976 by Ed and Sue Goldstein in memory of their daughter, Valerie. They have eight centers in hospitals in NJ, NY and Metro Philadelphia areas treating around 6,000 patients every year.
The Valerie Fund’s mission is to “provide individualized care to children at medical centers close to home, because we believe the most effective way to heal the children in our care is to treat them emotionally, socially and developmentally, as well as medically.”
Although I do not remember most of when I was treated, I am now aware of all the generous actions made by this organization. They continue to honor me as a survivor and make me feel proud of myself for what I have accomplished. The staff at The Valerie Fund is filled with caring individuals who do an excellent job at keeping hope alive even when times aren’t bright.
Bunny Flanders is among the people that met with me when I was young. Still today she keeps in touch with me and my family and puts so much effort into helping children who were in my situation.
The Valerie Fund has raised over thirteen million dollars dedicated to cancer patients. On March 27, Jersey Mike’s raised over $1.2 million dollars on “Day of Giving” in support of The Valerie Fund during their month of giving campaign.
Another way The Valerie Fund raises awareness and money is through an annual walk/5K run. This year’s walk will be held on Saturday, June 8 at 8:30 a.m. in Verona Park, NJ. As a longtime attendee, this event is a true representation of the phenomenal work they do.
Cancer affects millions of people across the world, including family members and our peers. The Scotch Plains-Fanwood community has held many fundraising events, which I am so grateful for.
I cannot thank The Valerie Fund and this community enough for helping me and my family.
