As students at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School decide where they are going to spend their next four years, many are having bed decorating parties. Bed parties have recently blown up on TikTok and other social media platforms. They are the perfect way to share and celebrate a college commitment.
Most bed parties include lettered balloons, streamers, pillows, blankets, lots of college merchandise and snacks that complement the color of the school. For example, if you are going to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, your bed will be covered in a plethora of red, white and black clothes, treats, accessories and more.
Many would argue that the most important part of a bed party is a “Bling Bottle,” a bedazzled bottle filled with sparkling apple cider.
Senior Lily Peskin is committed to the University of Florida and she cannot wait to celebrate this decision with her closest friends.
“I’m definitely very excited to see my bed set up and what ‘merch’/items I’ll get,” Peskin said. “But the most important part of the bed party is getting to spend time with my friends before graduating.”
When planning a bed party, the friends of the newly accepted college student try to surprise them. The friends create a group chat via text message or Snapchat to coordinate the details. To execute the surprise, one friend will take the girl whose bed party it is out for lunch or dinner, while the others will decorate her room.
Senior Emersyn Teicher recently committed to the University of Delaware and was very eager to experience a bed party of her own.
“I kind of expected it because my best friend and I decided that we were going to throw each other [bed parties],” Teicher said. “But I was so happy that I was able to celebrate with all my friends and I was so excited and surprised [in the moment].”
Following the big surprise, all the girls gather around the bed to take photos and share them on social media. They then usually head to the kitchen to share some of the snacks or even a cake with the logo of their friend’s future school.
“[A college commitment] is a really important milestone in someone’s life,” Teicher said. “[Bed parties] are a fun way to get cute clothes from your school and also celebrate with your friends.”
